The NPC mother, frankly, couldn't take care of her own kittens. A sad truth, but a truth nonetheless. And that, in itself, called for desperate measures.
They had been born yesterday, under the light of the hot midday sun. That part had gone on relatively undisturbed, and there hadn't been any problems for a small window of time. The NPC had licked them, made sure they were alive. There were two of them, both caracals like her and the father. What else would they be? She hadn't been sure what she had expected, but this was the first time she had ever had kids — these kinds of concerns were normal.
But... she just... couldn't. She wasn't born to be a mother, and the father didn't want them. That led her to where she was at that moment in time, sitting at the border of the Badlands with the two's scruffs in the firm hold of her maw. It had been a hard decision, but she had made it. There were others that would take better care of them as they grow up.
So she left the two small, defenseless caracals kittens on the border of the Badlands, with a note. Either they were eaten by predators, or taken in by the group she had chosen. The note read: "Take them in. Please. Give them a home where I couldn't."
[ the other kitten will be tracking soon! long story short: there are two caracal kittens on the border with a note. ]
